Megawati Leery of Jokowi Introducing New KPK Bill

7 October 2019 11:15 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri is reportedly closely monitoring the possibility of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi issuing a regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) to revoke the much-debated revision of the law on the corruption eradication commission (KPK Law).

Reports also suggest Megawati had summoned former Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly as news of the new draft was being brewed by the government.

“I explained [to her] about the Law’s development in the Parliament level,” said Yasonna in Tempo Magazine’s October 5th edition.

In his visit to an event held in Bali, Yasonna was asked to appear before Megawati to discuss the possibility of Jokowi issuing a perpu for the KPK Law that had just been passed by the House.

“Our stand on the matter has not changed. It is the same with what Pak Jokowi mentioned,” he said.

PDIP is one of the political parties that has openly gone against the issuance of a Perpu. It was also one of the initiators of the controversial KPK Law revision that sparked a public outcry.

The Party’s stand stayed clear as PDIP secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said the KPK Law should be applied first and evaluated if negative effects stem within the law.

“Changing the Law with government regulation in lieu of law, even before it is practiced, is a less than fortunate thing to do,” said Hasto on Saturday, September 28.
